South Korea’s Shin Woonseon made a fine start to the defence of her women’s lead title as the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) World Championships began in Champagny-en-Vanoise.

Shin was one of eight women to top the lead wall during the semi-final stage of the competition in France, but the reigning champion would achieve the feat in a faster time then her rivals.

Italy’s Angelika Rainer was the next quickest qualifier, while Russia’s Maria Tolokonina was third in the standings.

Song Han Na Rai, fresh from claiming the overall World Cup title last weekend with victory in Italy, was fourth.

She could prove the biggest threat to Shin in tomorrow’s final, with South Korea likely to fancy their chances of success.

The country will also have high hopes of the men’s World Cup winner Park Hee Yong, but he would lie fourth in the men’s semi-finals.

He was one of six men to reach the top of the wall, with only Iran’s Mohammadreza Safdarian and Russia’s Alexey Dengin failing to achieve the feat out of the eight qualifiers.

The standings were led by Switzerland’s Yannick Glatthard, who ended narrowly ahead of Russia’s Nikolai Kuzovlev.

Slovenia’s Janez Svoljsak was third in the standings.

The reigning champion, Maxim Tomilov of Russia, surprisingly failed to reach the semi-final stage of the competition as he bowed out in the first round.

The World Championships will conclude tomorrow with the lead and speed finals drawing to a close.
