South Korea enjoyed double success in lead events in Rabenstein ©UIAA

South Korea’s Hee Yong Park and Song Han Na Rai emerged as lead competition winners at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Cup in Rabenstein.

Both climbers had topped the overall World Cup standings for men and women respectively heading into the final World Cup meet of the season in Italy.

The duo were both able to rubber stamp their triumphs in the discipline, by producing strong displays throughout today’s competition.

Hee would triumph in the men’s competition by being the only athlete to reach the top of the climb in the final.

Maxim Tomilov would end in second position by scoring 19.302 in the discipline, with his efforts seeing him emerge as the best of the five Russian athletes in the eight-man final.

He was followed by his compatriots Nikolai Kuzovlev and Radomir Proshchenko, who scored 18.300 and 18.291 respectively.

The women’s event saw two athletes reach the top of the climb, with Song followed by Russia’s Maria Tolokonina.

Song’s score of 6.26 for reaching the top would be enough to edge out her rival, with Tolokonina ending on 6.37.

The result meant Tolokonina would end as the runner-up for the second straight day, having missed out on gold in the speed discipline yesterday.

South Korea’s Shin Woonseon would round off the podium, as the best placed athlete to not reach the top of the climb.

She scored 14.290, with Ekaterina Vlasova of Russia missing out on the top three.

The event came a week ahead of the World Championships, which will take place in Champagny-en-Vanoise, France, from February 4 to 5.
