Italy’s Anna Cavallaro claimed victory as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Vaulting season got underway in Madrid.

Competing in the Spanish capital city, Cavallaro produced a superb display on her horse Monaco Franze 4 to easily move to the top of the women's standings.

The Italian would end the competition with a total of 8.423, which would prove enough to claim victory during Madrid Horse Week.

"In Madrid the competition is wonderful, the organisation is fantastic and the arena is beautiful," said Cavallaro.

"I really want to come back and compete at this competition next year."

Cavallaro had the advantage of competing on her own horse at the event, with her rivals having to adapt as four horses were available for the eight competitors.

Switzerland’s Nadja Büttiker finished as the runner-up on 7.708, with her compatriot Marina Mohar completing the top three on 7.593.

The men’s title was claimed by Lukas Heppler, after he adapted well to competing on a borrowed horse to produce a strong display.

He would be awarded a total of 8.535, with the Swiss rider finishing ahead of defending FEI Vaulting World Cup champion Jannik Heiland.

The German would end second on 8.395, with his team-mate Daniel Kaiser finishing in third place on 8.176.

The second Vaulting World Cup of the season is due to take place tomorrow in Paris.
