Domen Prevc of Slovenia secured his first-ever International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup victory as brother Peter suffered a costly second round fall in Ruka in Finland today.

The 17-year-old produced jumps of 138.5 metres and 140.5m to earn a total of 321.8 points amid perfect weather conditions.

“I think it was a really fair competition, there wasn't a lot of wind so we could make great jumps,” the victorious Slovenian said.

“I can't really tell why I was so strong here today, I guess my coaches could maybe answer this question.

“Tomorrow is another day, we'll see if I can jump on the same level again.”

Olympic gold medallist Severin Freund, who was part of the victorious German side in the team competition at Sochi 2014, did enough for second place as he twice leapt 140m for an overall 318.3 points.

Peter Prevc, a double Olympic medallist at the Games in the Russian city, surged into the lead after a colossal first round attempt of 143 metres.

But the Slovenian, the current world champion, endured a disastrous second effort as he crashed on landing having jumped 140.5m.

Prevc ended the opening event of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup season on 310.8 points, comfortably adrift of Freund and his sibling, who sat proudly at the summit of the standings.

“Right now I'm okay, but the body is still full of adrenaline,” Peter Prevc said.

“But if I can walk and talk there is no big problem.

“Yesterday I made my first jumps on snow, so I had to adjust to the conditions and to the hill.

“We then analysed the jumps together with the coaches and made some changes in the in-run position and this worked out really well.

“After seeing how Domen jumped yesterday I knew that he is capable of achieving a really good result.”

Austrian competitor Manuel Fettner missed out on a podium place as his total of 304.5, achieved with jumps of 142m and 133m, was not enough to clinch a spot in the top three.

Poland’s Maciej Kot, who was the highest qualifier, could only manage fifth in the actual competition as he scored 303.7 points.

The second ski jumping event is due to be held tomorrow.
