Poland's Maciej Kot topped the qualification standings during the opening International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup event of the season as he edged team-mate Dawid Kubacki in Ruka in Finland today.

The event in Ruka is the traditional curtain-raiser for the Nordic season, with competitions due to be staged in cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Kot, bronze medallist at the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme in Italy, scored 149.3 points thanks to his jump of 141.5 metres.

Kubacki was second on 147.3 points, with Austrian Manuel Fettner finishing third on 144.3.

The main event of the weekend begins tomorrow with the start of the men’s Gundersen event – where athletes compete in ski jumping and cross country – which is part of the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup series.

Germany’s Eric Frenzel, the 10 kilometres normal hill Olympic champion, is targeting history this campaign as he bids for a record fifth consecutive crown, although he is likely to face stiff competition from Norway’s Jarl Magnus Riiber.

Further training and qualification is due to be held tomorrow before the competition gets fully underway the next day.

The action on Saturday (November 26) sees the first round of the men’s Gundersen as athletes prepare to tackle the hill and a 10km cross country race.

The same two events will then be held on Sunday (November 27), with 200 points towards the overall FIS Nordic Combined World Cup on offer.

A total of 25 events are set to take place over the course of the Nordic Combined season in 12 different venues.

It appears the weather has held out for the event after the wind prevented any action from taking place last year.

Organisers remain hopeful that will be the case after they installed a new ice inrun track and new wind nets.
