Preparations for the opening International Ski Federation (FIS) men's Ski Jumping World Cups of the season in Ruka will begin on November 7, it has been announced.

The Finnish venue will stage the 2016-17 curtain-raisers on November 25 and 26 but extra precautions have been put in place after last season's competitions were cancelled due to high wind.

Ruka was the second leg on the 2015-16 calendar but official training and qualification, and then the first day of competition, was called off.

Seventy jumpers did manage to compete on day two before strong winds returned and the action was permanently abandoned before being rescheduled in Lahti.

Germany's Andreas Wank had produced the best effort of the competition before the cancellation, leaping 129.5 metres.

Now, organisers have invested €1 million (£900,000/$1.1 million) in improvements in a bid to beat the weather.

A new in-run track and wind net have been installed, with the first tests of these this weekend.

The November 7 hill preparations will then be followed by team training on November 15.

The FIS have described the schedule set out by Finnish organisers as "ambitious".

The governing body had to move and reschedule a number of events due to the weather during the 2015-16 season - with unseasonable warmth which has melted snow at various venues another problem along with the winds.
