Kuwait’s Ahmad Alafasi claimed the men’s individual double trap title at the sixth Asian Shotgun Championships in Abu Dhabi today before helping his country win team gold in the discipline.

Alafasi beat the United Arab Emirates’ Saif Alshamsy 26-24 in the individual final and then joined forces with Saad Al Mutairi and Hamad Alafasi to take top honours in the team event ahead of India.

A score of 407 proved enough for the trio at the Al Forsan International Sports Resort, with India second and hosts UAE third.

India’s Ankur Mittal overcame Al Mutairi 30-27 in the individual bronze medal match.

Skeet competitions will bring the tournament to a close with the women's event due to take place on Tuesday (November 8) and the men's event scheduled for the following day.

Kuwaitis are competing as independent athletes at the Championships given that their country is currently suspended from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to Government interference.

A new sports law granted by the Sports Ministry, with the power to take over all sports bodies and National Federations, as well as being able to control decisions including appointments and financial matters, prompted the suspension.

Last week, a "parallel" National Olympic Committee set up by the Kuwaiti Government was threatened with legal action by the IOC for violating branding rules.
