Leading energy company Edison International are to support Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympics by working with the bid to create a clean and sustainable Games plan.

Los Angeles 2024 claim the backing of the Southern California based company highlights their commitment to staging an innovative, energy efficient and environmentally friendly Games.

Edison through its subsidiaries, including the Southern California Edison utility, distributes electricity and energy services and technologies throughout the city.

They are set to collaborate with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, as well as Los Angeles 2024, to ensure the Games plan relies on clean, sustainable and reliable energy.

"We are very pleased to work with Edison International and other local utilities to plan a sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games for 2024,"said Casey Wasserman, the chairman of Los Angeles 2024. 

"With no permanent construction required to host the Games and working with experienced utility leaders at Edison International and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, environmental protection and conservation will be at the forefront of our planning and our culture as we invite the world to ‘Follow the Sun’ to a New Games for a New Era.”

Edison currently employ around 12,500 people across Southern California and claim to have an active network of workers and volunteers in their communities.

Los Angeles 2024 promise that the company will engage their network, as well as community and business leaders, to support their bid for the Olympic Games.

"As a proud member of the Southern California community, Edison International is helping to create a clean future for us all," Pedro Pizarro, Edison International President and chief executive, said.

"Sustainability is a key pillar of both Los Angeles 2024 and the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Agenda 2020 strategic roadmap for the future, and we are pleased to support Los Angeles 2024 to achieve their Olympic and Paralympic Games energy plan."

Los Angeles is bidding against Budapest and Paris for the rights to host the Games in eight years’ time, with the IOC due to elect a host city in Peruvian capital Lima on September 13 next year.
