Japanese domination of women’s freestyle wrestling events continued as they won all four golds on offer today at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in Mâcon.

The Japanese team had celebrated two gold medals from the four divisions yesterday and their excellent record looked certain to continue when their four entries advanced to their division's gold medal bouts.

Defending 48 kilogram champion Miho Igarashi got the Japanese gold medal charge underway when she defeated Russia’s Nadezhda Sokolov in their final.

Igarashi, who had eliminated three-time European junior champion Miglena Selishka of Bulgaria in the semi-finals, achieved a 12-0 technical fall triumph over Sokolov following a dominant display.

Selishka finished on the podium courtesy of a 4-2 victory over China’s Ya Xie in the first bronze medal match, with Canada’s Jade Dufour earning a fall win over Argentina’s Evelin del Carmen Sosa in the second.

Japan’s Mayu Mukaida followed her team-mate Igarashi’s triumph with a similarly impressive display in the 55kg gold medal contest.

The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games gold medallist overcame Kazakhstan’s Marina Sedneva by a 11-0 technical fall verdict.

There were also technical fall victories for Hungary’s Romona Galambos and Ukraine’s Olena Kremzer in the bronze medal bouts, as they overcome Germany’s Debora Lawnitzak and China’s Tinglin Pan respectively.

Belarus’ Nadezhda Dragunova, competing in her first gold medal bout at international level, looked to end Japan’s dominance when she faced Ayana Gempei in the 63kg division.

She had no answer, hoever, to the three-time Asian champion, who emerged as an 11-0 technical fall winner.

The United States’ Maya Nelson won 9-4 against Russia’s Mariia Kuznetcova in the first bronze medal contest.

The podium was completed by China’s Hongli Yan, who defeated India’s Devi Pooja via a technical fall verdict.

Japan’s clean sweep of today’s gold medals was completed by Masako Furuichi, following a strong display in the 72kg final.

Furuichi, already the winner of two junior world titles in the 67kg division, showed the higher weight category was not a problem for her as she defeated Russia’s Daria Shisterova with a technical fall.

China’s Chuchu Yan emerged as a technical fall winner over Ukraine’s Anastasiia Shustova to secure a bronze medal, while Belarus’ Yauheniya Andreichykava sealed the other minor medal by winning 10-2 against Canada’s Gracelynn Doogan.

Japan, who also enjoyed huge success in women’s freestyle wrestling at Rio 2016 by winning four golds, will now hope for further victories when men’s freestyle competitions due to begin tomorrow.

The 50kg, 60kg, 74kg and 96kg divisions will all be contested tomorrow, with the remaining events set to bring the Championships to a conclusion on Sunday (September 4).
