The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) hosted a celebratory dinner for their returning Olympic athletes and officials who participated at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The dinner was held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in the Pacific country.

Fiji's men's rugby sevens team, who won a historic first-ever gold medal for the nation, were presented with International Olympic Committee (IOC) diplomas by IOC member Dr. Robin Mitchell, alongside their women's counterparts.

Their success was not just the first gold in the country's history, it was their first medal of any colour.

The IOC awards the diplomas to top eight finishers in competitions at the Olympic Games.

While the top three finishers have received medals since the 1896 Olympics, in 1949 diplomas for athletes placing fourth, fifth and sixth were established and in 1981 diplomas for seventh and eighth-place finishers were added.

The diploma is inscribed and signed by the President of the IOC and the Head of the Organising Committee for each Olympics.

Fiji's women's rugby sevens team finished in eighth position as the sport made its debut on the Olympic stage.

In addition, each Fijian athlete and official were presented with an IOC certificate of participation and commemorative medals for attending the Olympic Games.

Fiji’s youngest member, table tennis player Sally Yee, also presented on behalf of FASANOC a farewell gift to the men's rugby sevens coach Ben Ryan and his wife Natalie, in appreciation of their contribution to the success of the team.

The Englishman has since departed his role in charge of the team, and has also received three acres of land in Fiji.

Fiji's Chef de Mission Cathy Wong, in her address, urged athletes and National Federations to "start their planning processes now as Team Fiji moves forward in this new Olympiad towards Tokyo 2020".
