Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) gold sponsor Vodafone has donated FJ$15,000 (£5,500/$7,300/€6,600) worth of training kit for the nation’s athletes in the build-up to Rio 2016.

Cathy Wong, Fiji's Chef de Mission for next month’s Olympic Games, thanked the company for going “above and beyond” to help with the country’s preparations for the event.

Vodafone Fiji were named as the sponsor of the FASANOC back in April.

“This training kit is over and above what Vodafone has already given to Team Fiji,” said Wong.

“So Team Fiji is really, grateful.

“These training kits will only be used during training in Fiji before the first batch of Team Fiji departs on July 23 and the second batch departs on July 26,” she added.

The FASANOC was also boosted by a cash injection from the Bank of South Pacific Group in May to the tune of FJ$50,000 (£18,400/$24,300/€22,000).

The Pacific nation is due to send its biggest-ever team to an Olympic Games as a total of 89 athletes and officials are set to travel to Rio.

They will have high hopes of returning with their first-ever Olympic medal as the men’s team are favourites for gold in rugby sevens, which is making its debut on the programme.

Despite never stepping foot on the podium yet, the introduction of rugby sevens to the programme has given Fiji great hope as they are one of the world's major forces in the sport.

“Training gears are essential tools for the team as part of their training preparation to the Olympics,” Vodafone Fiji chief marketing officer Rajnesh Prasad said.

“This ensures uniformity among all our passionate and hardworking athletes.”
