Fifteen-year-old Hina Hayata performed heroically today to beat number three seed Yuka Ishigaki in an all-Japanese women’s final at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Australian Open.

Having earlier defeated compatriot Hitomi Sato 5-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 in the semi-finals, the number four seed went on to claim a 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-2 win over her 26-year-old opponent at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Victory secured Hayata her second ITTF World Tour title of the year, adding to the under-21 women’s singles crown she won in Kuwait in March.

Ishigaki had earned her place in the final by overcoming fellow Japanese Miyu Kato 11-8, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 6-11, 11-6.

There was further success for Japan in the men’s singles final as top seed Jun Mizutani lived up to his billing with a comfortable 11-8, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 victory over Singapore’s Li Hu, the number two seed.

The win ensured his third ITTF World Tour men’s singles title of the year, having also won in Poland and Slovenia, and the eighth of his career in 12 final appearances.

Mizutani reached the last round by defeating compatriot Yuto Kizukuri 11-4, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, while Li advanced to his first-ever ITTF World Tour men’s singles final with a 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-3, 11-6 triumph over Chen Feng in an all-Singapore encounter.

Success for Hayata and Mizutani completed a Japanese clean sweep of titles at the ITTF Australian Open, with Mizuki Oikawa and Kato winning the respective under-21 men’s and under-21 women’s events yesterday and the men’s and women’s doubles crowns going the country's way earlier today.

Number seven seeds Takuya Jin and Yuki Morita beat France’s Antoine Hachard and Romain Ruiz 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 to clinch gold in the men’s doubles, while top-seeded women's doubles pairing Honoka Hashimoto and Sato overcame home favourites Jian Fang Lay and Miao Miao 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 in their final.
