Seventeen-year-old Yuto Kizukuri of Japan recorded a shock victory over number three seed Antoine Hachard to progress to the semi-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Australian Open at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Kizukuri beat his 22-year-old French opponent 11-6, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 to reach the last four of an ITTF World Tour men’s singles event for the first time in his career.

Victory made up for the disappointment of losing the under-21 men’s singles final earlier in the day when he suffered a 6-11, 12-10, 7-11, 6-11 defeat at the hands of top-seeded compatriot Mizuki Oikawa.

Jun Mizutani, also of Japan, overcame fellow countryman Takuya Jin 11-5, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 to reserve his place in the semi-final stage of an ITTF World men’s singles event for the third time this year.

On the two previous occasions he has made the penultimate round, in Poland and Slovenia, he has progressed to win the tournament.

Following Mizutani's meeting with Kizukuri in the first of tomorrow's men's semi-finals, Chen Feng and Li Hu will go up against each other in an all-Singaporean encounter after both came through their last-eight ties.

Li, the number two seed, beat Oikawa 7-11, 12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9, while Feng, the number four seed, defeated compatriot Yang Zi 11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-6.

Miyu Kato beat Romania’s Elizabeta Samara 10-12, 11-5, 11-2, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4 in the last of the women’s quarter-finals to ensure that all four semi-finalists are from Japan.

Success concluded a hugely successful day for the 17-year-old, who earlier defeated team-mate Sakura Mori 11-6, 11-7, 12-10 in the under-21 women’s singles final.

Next up for the number two seed is a meeting with number three seed Yuka Ishigaki, who ended the hopes of Japan’s Saki Shibata with an 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10 win.

The other semi-final pits top seed Hitomi Sato, an 11-9, 11-8, 14-12, 11-7 victor at the expense of Mori, against number four seed Hina Hayata, a 19-17, 11-6, 12-10, 13-11 winner over Japan’s Honoka Hashimoto.
