Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics is backed by nearly nine out of 10 local citizens, a new poll has claimed.

The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) released the results of its recent public opinion survey that found that 88 per cent of Angelenos support the city's campaign, compared with 12 per cent opposed.

Including those respondents who did not answer in the survey, 85 per cent support Los Angeles hosting the Games, 11 per cent oppose and 4 per cent did not answer

LMU conducted its telephone survey of 2,425 adults in January and February 2016.

“Not only does every demographic and geographic group support the Summer Olympics potentially returning to Los Angeles, but they do so in tremendous numbers,” said Brianne Gilbert, associate director of the Center.

“It’s hard to think of anything else that 80 percent of Los Angeles agrees with across every category.”

Among those who supported the bid, nearly half said they believed the Games would provide an economic boost or create local jobs.

Opponents’ top concerns were the cost of hosting major events and a potential increase in traffic.

“The concerns expressed by those who oppose LA’s bid are the same we’ve heard publicly about potential drawbacks to hosting,” said Fernando Guerra, director of the Center and a political science professor at LMU.

"The increasing level of support shown in our survey suggests the Organizing Committee has made strides in addressing those issues.”

Los Angeles is seeking to become only the second city after London to host the Olympics three times, having previously staged them in 1932 and 1984.

"The LMU poll finding enthusiastic public support for LA 2024's Olympic and Paralympic Games bid is a very strong indication that Angelenos have confidence in our fiscally responsible, sustainable and innovative plan for the Games," said Los Angeles 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman.

"Angelenos' overwhelming support is consistent across all ages, all demographics and all the diverse cultures in LA, reaffirming our multicultural, multi-ethnic city's backing for bringing the Olympic Games to Los Angeles and to the United States for the first time in 28 years.”

The LMU poll follows a telephone survey conducted by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) from August 1 to 3 last year that found that 81 per cent of Angelenos supported Los Angeles hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Los Angeles high poll figures contrast sharply with those in Boston, where 53 per cent of local citizens were opposed to the bid by the time it was dropped last July and replaced by the Californian city.

“The Olympics are in LA's DNA," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

"Angelenos 'follow the sun' every day.

"They are optimists, innovators and big-dreamers.

"They embrace hard work, progress and opportunity. And they are constantly asking, 'What’s next?'

"Hosting a new Games for a new era doesn’t just fit the bricks and mortar of our city; it fits our citizens’ relentless spirit of reinvention.

"Angelenos welcomed the world with open arms in 1984 and we have experienced the benefits ever since, so we’re excited by the prospect of doing it again at a reimagined Games in 2024.

"The IOC (International Olympic Committee) can have complete confidence that if they award Los Angeles the honor of naming us host city, they will be bringing the Games back to a city that truly loves them.”

Los Angeles is considered the joint favourite, along with Paris, to be awarded the Olympics and Paralympics by the IOC at its Session in Lima next year.

Budapest and Rome are also bidding.
