Norbu claimed a points win to follow in the footsteps of Sigyel Phub, the last boxer from Bhutan to win a bout in a major international tournament at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.

He now faces a quarter-final encounter with Iran’s Hassan Shahini, winner by technical knockout against Mongolia’s Erdenebayar Sandagsuren, on Wednesday (September 2).

Kyrgyzstan enjoyed a perfect day in Thailand’s capital as the preliminary stages concluded, starting with success for defending flyweight champion Azat Usenaliev over Sri Lanka’s Roshan Bulugaha Elegedara Warnasooriya.

There was also a win for light welterweight Ermek Sakenov against Pakistan’s Gul Zaib as he bids to win his fifth tournament of the year, while newly-crowned light heavyweight national champion Erkinbek Adylbek Uulu ensured Kyrgyzstan’s third victory after eliminating Iraq’s Ahmed Wameedh Al-Mahdawe.

"It was my first bout here in Bangkok, and finally after my training I was able show my skills in the Championships," said Sakenov, an International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist in 2013. 

"I was too slow in the opening round and did not use enough punches, but I improved from the second round onwards.

"I know it was not my best performance, but I have to go step by step in order to accomplish my dream in the event."

Elsewhere, Kazakhstan’s Olzhas Sattibayev advanced to the quarter-finals of the flyweight division, outpointing Thailand’s ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist Tanes Ongjunta.

His team mate Adilbek Niyazymbetov, silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games and also at the last two editions of the AIBA World Boxing Championships, produced a dazzling performance to beat Turkmenistan’s Azizbek Achilov at light heavyweight.

The most exhilarating bout of the day came at light welterweight as Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk, an Incheon 2014 Asian Games gold medallist, overcame Mongolia’s military world champion Battarsukh Chinzorig.

Another fascinating battle came at flyweight as number one seed Sajad Mohammadpour of Iran suffered a shock loss to Turkmenistan’s Zarip Jumayev.

The first stage of the quarter-finals is due to held tomorrow when 20 bouts are scheduled across two sessions.
