Japan's Ryomei Tanaka earned the outstanding victory on day three of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Bangkok as Turkmenistan enjoyed the best of the action elsewhere.

Two of the Central Asian nation's fighters progressed to the last 16 of their respective divisions, starting with Zarip Jumayev, who recovered from a serious injury to overcome Indonesian flyweight Julio Bria.

In the final bout of the evening session, President’s Cup silver medallist Arslanbek Achilov then earned a superb knock-out victory over Japan’s Ryota Hamazaki.

On a day where action took place in the flyweight, light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight categories, Tanaka ensured there was Japanese success in the Thai capital.

In his first major international competition, the flyweight fighter overcame a slow start to beat Mongolian rival Nurlan Askhar, pulling ahead in the final round with a succession of strong and accurate combinations.

The 22-year-old Japanese boxer will next meet Uzbekistan’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Shakhobiddin Zoirov.

The biggest shock came in the middleweight division when China’s Zhou Di overcame Jordan’s Odai Riad Al-Hindawi, the man who had beaten him in the quarter-finals of last Autumn's Asian Games in incheon.

Elsewhere, Sri Lanka’s Sisira Kumarasinghe produced an inspired performance to defeat Taiwan's Chen Kuan Hua at welterweight, while Philippines’ junior world champion Eumir Felix Marcial overcame Kyrgyzstan’s Erkinbek Bolotbek Uulu in the same division.
