Hopes that Barcelona would become the first city to stage both the Summer and Winter Olympics seem about to be dashed with news that a proposed bid for 2022 is set to be droppedOctober 14 - Barcelona has abandoned plans to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, it has been reported in Spain.

Barcelona newspaper SPORT has claimed the city's Mayor Xavier Trias will announce later this week that they will not attempt to become the first city in history to host the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Barcelona staged a hugely successful Summer Olympics in 1992 but Madrid's defeat for 2020 at the hands of Tokyo - their third consecutive unsuccessful bid - has left the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) feeling deflated and damaged public support for a bid, SPORT claimed.

In July, Trias had claimed that Barcelona would bid for the Olympics if Madrid did not win the 2020 vote.

The bid had originally been the idea of former Mayor, Jordi Hereu i Boher, who had publicly announced the idea in 2010.

The opening, closing, medal ceremonies, and indoor sports would be held in sporting arenas in Barcelona while outdoor sports would be held in ski resorts in the Pyrenees.

Munich, the 1972 Summer Olympics host, is continuing with bid plans for 2022, hoping to become the first Summer and Winter Olympic host city.

But its hopes depend on a referendum on November 10 to be held in Munich along with Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the counties of Berchtesgaden and Traunstein, where some events would take place.

The only official bid for 2022 so far is from Almaty, Kazakhstan, but other European cities such as Oslo and Stockholm have also expressed interest.

Any cities that plan to have bid have to inform the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by November 14 with a decision due to be announced in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
