The Irish superstar made easy work of her "Road to Jeju" opponent as she secured victory in each of the rounds to progress to the last 16 of the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) flagship women's event in Jeju City.

Taylor is a strong favourite to win her fifth 60 kilogram world title in just the eighth edition of Championships.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist and Taylor's Irish team mate, Michaela Walsh, also moved into the last 16 of the competition as she bested Jamaica's experienced Sarah-Joy Rae in the 54kg category.

Walsh had recorded a similar victory over Rae in the opening round of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and once again proved too strong for her Jamaican opponent.

There was a shock on the cards in the 48kg division where Josie Gabuco, the Philippines' first AIBA women's world champion, took an early exit at the hands of Chinese Taipei's Pin Meng Chieh.

Chieh had won just one bout in her three previous World Championships but a move down from the heavier class seemed to have paid dividends as she knocked out one of the favourites for the title.

Reigning bronze medallist in the 54kg class, Christina Cruz, was also left shocked after suffering an opening round defeat to Bulgaria's Stanimira Petrova.

The American had picked up silver at AMBC American Women's Continental Championships two months ago but fell to the powerful hooks of Petrova inside the Halla Gymnasium.

China's defending silver medallist Xu Shiqi scraped through her tough draw with Bulgaria's Sevda Asenova in the hotly contested 48kg category.

Asenova had picked up silver at the EUBC European Women's Continental Championships in Bucharest earlier this year but could not overhaul the powerful Chinese boxer.

The action in Jeju continues tomorrow with a further 40 bouts set to take to the ring in Jeju.

The winners of the 51 kg, 69 kg, 81 kg and over 81 kg will advance to the top eight, while the boxers of the 75 kg also begin their competition.
