Storey announces pregnancy after record-breaking London 2012
Thursday, 13 December 2012
December 13 - Sarah Storey, Britain's most bemedalled ever female Paralympian, has announced that she and her husband Barney are expecting their first child.
The 34-year-old cyclist, born without a left hand, won four gold medals at London 2012, taking her total of titles to 11 and her overall number of medals to 22.
Husband Barney, 35, meanwhile, broke the world record to win the B1km time trial - riding as sighted pilot to visually impaired Neil Fachie, 29.
It was the third Paralympic gold medal of his career having won two at Beijing in 2008.
Sarah Storey announced the news on Twitter.
"Well the exciting week we are having gets even more exciting because @BarneyStorey & I are expecting a baby in June #happyhappyhappy," she wrote.
The couple married five years ago.
"It's fantastic, - I just don't know if 2012 can get any better with the Paralympics and now this," she said.
"It's amazing news, but I can't really compare it to winning gold in the Paralympics, they are two very different things."
The couple, who live in Disley, Cheshire, will wait until the birth to find out the sex of the baby.
"As long as it's healthy and happy we don't care," said Barney.
"It's very very early days in terms of Sarah's pregnancy."
Storey's remarkable record started as a swimmer at Barcelona in 1992 when she won six medals, including two gold.
At Atlanta four years later she claimed five medals, three of them gold, before winning two silver at Sydney 2000 and two silver and a bronze at Athens 2004.
Storey then switched to cycling - which is how she met Barney - and at Beijing won two golds before her brilliant performance at London, which saw her surpass Baroness Tani Grey-Thompson as Britain's most successful female Paralympic athlete.
