Alexandru Manole and Alina Zaharia secured Romanian mixed doubles table tennis gold at the 2017 Francophone Games in Abidjan.

The duo were pushed all the way before a five set victory over French opponents Joe Seyfried and Oceane Guisnel.

They lost a 2-0 advantage before fighting back to triumph 12-10, 11-7, 4-11, 6-11, 11-9.

Gaël Vendé and Salomé Claire Simonet of Switzerland and Vietnam’s Bui The Nghia and Pham Thi Thu Huong each took bronze after losing their respective semi-finals.

Seyfried and Guisnel did not have long to wait before golden success though as they avenged their Romanian opponents in the mixed team final.

Switzerland and Lebanon shared bronze.

The event was declared open on Friday (July 21) in the Ivorian capital.

However, the Opening Ceremony was overshadowed by series of shootings in the city.

But Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara claimed the event should unite French-speaking countries when speaking during the Opening Ceremony.

The Games are due to take place until July 30 with cultural activities being held alongside the sporting competitions.

Athletics, African and free wrestling, basketball, football, judo, table tennis and cycling will be contested, as well as Para-sport.

Athletes from 48 teams are participating, all of whom are from French or "mostly-French" speaking areas.
