Natacha Ngoye-Akamabi claimed gold for the Republic of Congo in the women's 100 metres at the 2017 Francophone Games in Abidjan today.

The 23-year-old from Brazzaville is better known as a 200m runner, but produced a superb performance today at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.

She clocked 11.56sec to triumph in front of Cameroon's Marie Gisele Eleme-Asse by three hundredths of a second.

Samantha Dagry of Switzerland clocked 11.68 for bronze.

The event was declared open on Friday (July 21) in the Ivorian capital.

However, the Opening Ceremony was overshadowed by series of shootings in the city.

But Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara claimed the event should unite French-speaking countries when speaking during the Opening Ceremony.

The Games are due to take place until July 30 with cultural activities being held alongside the sporting competitions.

Athletics, African and free wrestling, basketball, football, judo, table tennis and cycling will be contested, as well as Para-sport.

Athletes from 48 teams are participating, all of whom are from French or "mostly-French" speaking areas.

Full results are not yet available.
