The 2017 International Canoe Federation Ocean Racing World Cup season is set to continue this weekend in Portugal.

The 20 kilometre downwind race between Viana do Castelo and Esposende in the north of Portugal is due to take place tomorrow.

More than 250 paddlers from 20 countries are set to compete in stong winds and powerful waves as they head towards Ofir Beach, with €20,000 (£17,600/$22,800) in prize money on offer.

South Africa’s Hank McGregor claimed a convincing win in last weekend’s World Cup opener in Mauritius.

He finished more than a minute in front of the rest of the field.

In the women’s race another South African, Michelle Burn, claimed victory.

Following this weekend's stage in Portugal, action will turn to Tahiti before the World Cup comes to an end in Brest, France.

The season will then conclude with the World Championships in Hong Kong in November.

The event is scheduled for the weekend of November 25 and 26 alongside the Asian Championships, with both events including men's and women's races.

Officials are already anticipating between 400 and 500 entrants for the World Championships.

The developing sport sees competitors reach top speeds of 30 kilometres-per-hour in specially designed long and narrow lightweight open kayaks - or surfskis - which are steered by a foot pedal controlled rudder.
