Los Angeles 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman has praised Mayor Eric Garcetti for a "a remarkable year of action against climate change" while reiterating the Bid Committee's pledge to hold the "Greenest Games in history".

Wasserman’s comments follow Garcetti’s latest climate change initiatives in Los Angeles, which include improving energy and water efficiency in buildings and bringing more clean energy vehicles to disadvantaged communities.

The energy and water aims focus on sharply reducing the carbon footprint of the city’s buildings, some of which will be used if Los Angeles is successful with its 2024 Olympic and Paralympic bid.

The plan for vehicles includes a pilot programme which Garcetti hopes will bring cleaner energy cars to deprived areas.

Garcetti delivered a speech at the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Conference in Mexico City earlier this month.

He delivered his keynote address to a network of the world’s largest cities, announcing new actions for Los Angeles to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ramp up electric vehicle use.

LA 2024 expects the initiatives will put the city at the forefront of the Olympic Movement's drive for a more sustainable and greener Games.

Garcetti has also led an open letter with 47 other American Mayors to President-elect Donald Trump, who expressed his support for Los Angeles’ bid during a recent phone call with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, urging him to tackle the climate crisis.

He highlighted LA’s existing target of 80 per cent GHG reductions by 2050, and discussed his plan to identify additional strategies to help stem climate change, during his speech at the event.

"The Los Angeles 2024 team would like to commend Mayor Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles on a remarkable year of action against climate change,” Wasserman said.

"Los Angeles' environmental innovation and commitment to sustainability is paramount to helping us deliver the Greenest Games in history.

"The Mayor’s latest initiatives are further reassurance to the Olympic family that LA 2024 would be a Games-changer when it comes to environmental sustainability."

Paris and Budapest are also bidding for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The IOC will elect its chosen host city at its Session in Lima on September 13.
