Sergei Murashev produced a fine display on home soil as he was one of many boxers to advance at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships at the Sibur Arena in Saint Petersburg today.

Murashev, competing in the men's light heavyweight 81 kilogram competition, was the clear winner in his bout against Dzmitry Verkhaleu of Belarus.

Roared on by the home crowd gathered in the 7,000-capacity venue, Murashev was awarded the win after the judges scored the contest unanimously in his favour.

Four of the judges scored it 30-23 to Murashev, while the fifth declared it slightly closer at 30-25.

Joining the Russian in the next round of the 81kg event was Cuban Osvary David Morrell Gutierrez after he produced a sublime performance to pick up a stoppage victory over Stefan Patrascu of Romania. 

Towards the dying stages of the third round Gutierrez caught his opponent perfectly forcing the referee to call for the bell. 

There was also a number of heavyweight bouts today and Romanian Cristian Razvan Filip was the first to progress in the 91kg event after he scored a unanimous decision win over Lee Yuntaek of South Korea.

Poland's Kamil Offman was also in good form as he dispatched Lithuanian Robertas Jokulys in the heavyweight competition with a unanimous judges' decision win. 

Naman Tanwar of India soon joined him in the next round after he too secured a comprehensive win from the judges over Croatia's Marijan Brnic.

This afternoon's schedule was dominated by 46-49kg bouts.

There was further delight for the hosts as Volodya Mnatsakanyan squeezed past Chen Zexin of China on a split decision. 

Judges one, two and four all sided with the Russian while three and five believed Chen to be the winner. 

Carlo Paalam of the Philippines was also successful today after he overcame Ireland's Jordan Moore in the 46-49kg event. 

Paalam secured significant backing from the judges and was rewarded for his efforts with a 4-1 points decision success.

The competition, open to male boxers born in 1998 and 1999, is due to continue with further preliminary round action tomorrow when48 bouts are scheduled to take place.
