European junior champion Charles Frankham of England got his campaign at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships off to a winning start as he beat Slovakia’s Filip Meszaros at the Sibur Arena in Saint Petersburg.

Frankham, who earned bronze at last year’s event in the Russian city, made light work of his Slovakian opponent as he progressed to the next round of the bantamweight event thanks to a unanimous decision in his favour.

He was joined in round two by Russia’s Nikita Piskunov, who delivered success for the home crowd by overcoming Dzmitry Dziashkevich of Belarus.

Piskunov was by far the better fighter and was awarded the bout on all five judges’ scorecards.

Other winners in the bantamweight division included Oleksandr Zhelezniak of the Ukraine, who was involved in a titanic tussle with Japan’s Tiaga Imanaga before emerging victorious by split decision.

The super heavyweight category at the fifth edition of the Youth World Championships provided the most entertainment on the opening day in Saint Petersburg as three bouts were decided by technical knockout.

Aiboldy Daurenuly of Kazakhstan stopped opponent Onder Nuri Malkoc of Turkey with 1min 59sec on the clock, before Richard Torrez of the United States enjoyed an easy win over Junior Albeiro Gonzalez of Colombia.

The American boxer was all over the Colombian before the referee called a halt to proceedings in the second round.

Italy’s Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine was the other competitor to earn victory by TKO as he followed in the footsteps of Torrez by stopping Lucijano Cosic of Croatia in round two.

Australia’s Justis Huni also progressed at super heavyweight as he beat Alisher Dustov of Uzbekistan 5-0, while Azerbaijan’s Mahammad Abdullayev swept aside Marek Korolkov of Lithuania by the same scoreline.

All 10 Olympic weight categories will be contested in Saint Petersburg, with the competition due to take place until November 26.

Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba and Tony Yoka of France, the winners of Olympic gold medals at Rio 2016, are among previous winners from the Youth World Championships.
