Glenallen School have honoured their former pupil Tim Disken for his three Paralympic Games medal haul at Rio 2016 by naming their swimming pool in his honour.

Disken, who has cerebral palsy, earned a Paralympic gold medal in the men’s S9 100 metres freestyle event at the Games, triumphing in a time of 56.23sec.

The 19-year-old then secured a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and a bronze in the 200m individual medley event at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

With the swimmer having trained in the Glenallen School pool between 2011 and 2015, while he was a student, it was decided that the best way to mark their former pupil’s achievement was to rename the facility in his honour.

"Tim embodied the school’s motto of achievement through active learning and we are all extremely proud of him," said Glenallen School Principal Michael Cole.

"He was a hard working student who became school captain, supported other students and represented the school in the community.

"He has already achieved so much but I am sure he will go on to achieve even more."

Disken returned to the school in Glen Waverley for a ceremony to reveal the name change, which was also attended by Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria.

The school caters for students with a wide range of intellectual and physical abilities.

They have been handed a boost after their bathrooms, swimming pool changing rooms and accessibility improvements will be carried out, after the state were provided a AUD$155.8 million (£97 million/$119 million/€108 million) funding boost by the Government to ensure students with special needs get the opportunities they deserve.

"Tim is an inspiration for Glenallen students, just as he is an inspiration for all Victorians," Andrews said at the ceremony.

"His remarkable achievements have made this great school proud and will provide the motivation for future students to fulfil their dreams and potential."
