The South American was in devastating form as he lifted 160 kilograms to win the snatch title, a new global best in the men's 77kg division.

He then managed 191kg for a new world record in the clean and jerk, meaning he easily won the overall title with a combined 351kg, another world record.

American James Maurus won all three silver medals, with his best snatch lift of 145kg someway adrift of Lopez's effort.

The US lifter's clean and jerk performance saw him lift 176kg, for a combined 321kg.

The bronze medals in the snatch and clean and jerk were shared, with the former going to Kazakhstan's Yevgeniy Lomanov who lifted 140kg.

Iran's Ahmad Ahmadnejad hauled up 169kg for clean and jerk bronze, but his combined total was 4kg short of Lomanov's who took overall bronze on 307kg.

In the women's 63kg division at the Spice Arena, China's Shuan Huang won the clean and jerk and overall gold medals.

Her compatriot Xiahong Su won the snatch title, with a lift of 95kg which was just one kilogram more than Huang managed.

Huang then lifted 117kg for the clean and jerk title, with Su having to settle for bronze on 115kg.

It meant that the overall title went to Huang by the narrowest of margins, with her combined weight of 211kg just edging Su who managed 210kg.

Thailand's Rodsukon Sonkaew, fourth in the snatch and second in the clean and jerk, won overall bronze on 208kg.

Hellen Andrea Escobar Aguirre lifted 93kg for snatch bronze and was fourth overall.
