China dominated the second day of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships in Penang as Huang Gaoming and Yu Mengqian won the respective men’s 56 kilograms and women’s 53kg titles.

Huang won the snatch with a lift of 115kg and then the clean and jerk with 140kg for a winning total of 255kg at SPICE, an indoor venue in the Malaysian city. 

Nearest challenger Jeremy Lalrinnunga of India finished runner-up with a total of 235kg after coming second in the snatch with 108kg and fifth in the clean and jerk with 127kg.

The bronze medallist was Lalrinnunga’s compatriot Raja Muthupandi, who came ninth in the snatch with 100kg and second in the clean and jerk with 133kg for a total of 233kg.

Turkey’s Yusuf Gocmenoglu rounded out the podium in the snatch with 107kg, but finished seventh overall with 227kg after ending up 11th in the clean and jerk with 120kg.

Ecaudor’s Julian Javier Rivera Barros completed the top three in the clean and jerk with 131kg having earlier managed 101kg in the snatch.

His total of 232kg saw him narrowly miss out on the overall podium, finishing a kilogram shy of Muthupandi’s total.

In the women’s 53kg, Yu recovered from finishing fourth in the snatch with 77kg to win the clean and jerk with 105kg and take the overall crown with 182kg.

Colombia’s Yenny Sinisterra Torres won the gold medal in the snatch by virtue of bodyweight after a lift of 78kg, but could only manage second spot in the clean and jerk with 101kg and subsequently ended three kilograms shy of Yu’s total with 179kg. 

Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao came third overall with 178kg after taking bronze in both the snatch and clean and jerk with respective lifts of 78kg and 100kg.

Matching the 78kg of Sinisterra Torres and Khambao in the snatch was Ukraine’s Kamila Konotop, placing him in the runners-up spot on bodyweight.
