Poland’s newly-formed pairing of Bartosz Losiak and Michal Bryl won their third-straight Pool F match at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Major Series event in Klagenfurt today to advance to the second round of elimination.

With his Olympic partner Piotr Kantor sidelined through injury, Losiak is playing with Bryl in their first-ever FIVB World Tour event.

The 11th seeds followed up their two victories from yesterday by claiming an impressive 19-21, 21-18, 15-13 victory over sixth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst of The Netherlands.

"It is better for Piotr to rest and prepare for Rio," Losiak, who finished fifth alongside Bryl at the 2014 FIVB Under-23 World Championships in front of a home crowd in Myslowice, said.

"It was a tough qualifying process for the Olympics and Piotr has played hurt the past two months.

"He had to the rest and I needed to compete to stay in shape and connected with the tour.

"So far, Michal and I have played well together this week."

Next up for Losiak and Bryl is a meeting tomorrow with Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Nikita Liamin, who after coming second in Pool H beat seventh seeds Markus Böckermann and Lars Flüggen of Germany 25-27, 21-12, 21-19 in the first round of elimination.

Barsouk and Liamin were runners-up to American brothers Taylor and Trevor Crabb, one of seven pairings to go through with perfect records along with the likes of Russia’s Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin from Pool A and Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sorum from Pool E.

In the women’s quarter-finals, 13th seeds Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug of Argentina upset the odds to register a 21-18, 15-21, 15-13 victory over second seeds Britta Büthe and Karla Borger of Germany.

Earlier in the day, Gallay and Klug overcame Brazilians Juliana Felisberta and Taiana Lima 19-21, 21-18, 15-10 to reach the last eight and ensure their best-ever result in an FIVB World Tour Grand Slam or Major Series event.

Next up for the Rio 2016-bound pair is Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr, who defeated Spain’s Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernández 21-17, 21-17 to reach their first Grand Slam or Major Series semi-final as a pairing.

The other last-four encounter pits top seeds Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany against 18th seeds Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland.

European champions Ludwig and Walkenhorst, one of the favourites for Olympic gold with four FIVB World Tour titles under their belt this season, beat Switzerland’s Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré 21-19, 10-21, 20-18.

Emerging stars Betschart and Hüberli reached the semi-finals after Czech Republic’s Markéta Sluková and Barbora Hermannova were forced to forfeit due to a twisted knee that flared up on the latter.

Hermannova originally suffered the injury yesterday and tried to play through it, but pulled out as a precautionary measure.
