The British Olympic Association (BOA) has named a 44-strong performance services team who will provide support to athletes from the country during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The team, which includes doctors, physiotherapists, sports scientists, performance nutritionists and nurse practitioners, has a combined experience of working at 72 multi-sport Games, according to the BOA.

They will be led by Deputy Chef de Mission - Performance Services James Moore, who has previously held positions with English rugby union club Saracens, UK Athletics and the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Doctor Niall Elliot has been chosen as the chief medical officer having performed the role for the Scottish team at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Elliot will be the head of the medical team for the British athletes at Rio 2016, which will attend training and competition venues during the event in the Brazilian city.

Phil Glasgow, who has worked at four Olympic Games and three Commonwealth Games, will be Team GB’s chief physiotherapist professor, while Stafford Murray will head up the performance analysis team.

The BOA has confirmed four analysts will be based in Rio, while the others will work out of the EIS High Performance Centres at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance.

An eight-strong performance services support team has also been assembled to support athletes at Team GB’s preparation camp in Belo Horizonte.

"The Rio 2016 Olympic Games provides a unique opportunity to bring together the best scientific minds from all national sports institutes, the National Governing Bodies and the UK High Performance Sport network to prepare Team GB for the Games," Moore said.

“High performance sport within the UK has advanced significantly since the London 2012 Olympic Games in its delivery of technical expertise to sport.

"It is an honour and a privilege to support all the athletes and sports in their delivery at the inaugural Games in South America and be part of their strive for greatness.

“I am proud to lead such a knowledgeable and experienced team of professionals in Rio and support the largest Team GB athlete delegation at an away Games within modern Olympic era.”
