Russia’s Yana Kudryavtseva will be aiming to step up her preparations for an assault on the Olympic title at Rio 2016 when she competes on home soil in the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Rhythmic World Cup in Kazan, which gets underway tomorrow.

The World Cup at the 2,000-capacity Gymnastics Centre in the Russian city is the penultimate event ahead of next month’s Games.

It will allow gymnasts to gauge the competition as they bid to signal their intentions to the rest of the participants with the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro looming large.

Kudryavtseva, the 18-year-old Russian sensation who already has 11 World Championships gold medals in her ever-growing collection, is once again the leading name.

She is the strong favourite to seal her maiden Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and comes into the competition in Kazan having clinched the all-around title at last month’s European Championships in Holon in Israel.

Kudryavtseva, who opted not to participate at the Berlin Masters Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup last weekend, is likely to face the usual challengers in the Russian city.

Belarus’ Melitina Staniouta, a five-time World Championships silver medallist, will also be one to look out for at the event, along with Kudryavtseva’s team-mate Margarita Mamun.

The Russian won the world hoops title last year and is continuing to put in improved performances in the all-around and may pose the biggest threat to her team-mate when they take to the home mat.

Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova, world champion with the hoop in 2013, is one of the most notable absentees from the event.

Action begins tomorrow with the all-around competition, before the individual finals are held on Saturday (July 9).

The World Cup then concludes with the group events on Sunday (July 10).
