Colombia’s Nairo Quintana claimed overall victory at the Tour de Romandie after finishing safely in the main field on the closing day of the International Cycling Union (UCI) WorldTour race, with Switzerland’s Michael Albasini earning stage five victory from the break.

Albasini, who rides for the Australian Orica-GreenEdge team, was part of a 10-man move which developed in the early stages of the 177 kilometres route from Ollon to Geneva.

Among his breakaway compatriots was Britain’s Chris Froome, winner of yesterday’s stage, who helped ensure the pace of the move remained high.

Spain’s Carlos Verona launched a bid for victory in the final 16km, with Albasini and The Netherlands’ Wilco Kelderman following his effort.

The trio were caught by the charging Swiss rider Tom Bohli in the final kilometre but Albasini held off the closing peloton to sprint to victory in a time of 4 hours 13min 17sec.

Costa Rica’s Andrey Amador claimed second place on the stage ahead of Kelderman, with both riders awarded the same time as the winner.

Quintana crossed the line safely to preserve his 19 second advantage over France’s Thibaut Pinot in the overall standings.

It allowed the Colombian to claim his first Tour de Romandie victory and his second UCI WorldTour title of the season after earning the overall win at the Volta a Catalunya in March.

Spain’s Jon Izagirre, winner of the prologue, finished 23 seconds adrift of the winner to earn the final podium position.
