Germany’s Henri Junghaenel earned the fourth International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup of his career by triumphing in the men’s 50 metres prone rifle event at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Rio de Janeiro.

The winner of the 2013 ISSF Shooter of the Year award, the current world record holder, produced a stunning display throughout the duration of a competition serving as a Rio 2016 test event.

Junghaenel moved to the top of the standings after the fourth round of shooting and refused to relinquish his advantage, despite being put under pressure by Bangkok World Cup winner, Australia's Warrent Potent.

The 26-year-old scored 10.5 or over on 13 occasions to claim the gold medal with a final total of 210 points, just 1.2 behind his world record mark.

Potent settled for the silver medal position, finishing with a score of 207.9.

“I started off a little bit on the right, but once I fixed that the final was pretty awesome,” said Junghaenel.

“After I placed sixth in Bangkok I made some adjustments, but I didn’t expect a win here, I’m pretty happy about it.

“It’s been a great final, no doubt about that.

“The range need some minor fixes, but you can already say it’s a good range.”

Serbia’s Steven Pletikosic were eliminated from the competition before the final round of the competition but his tally of 186.2 points proved enough to claim the bronze medal.

Niccolò Campriani missed out on claiming a medal, the Italian having finished with a total of 165.3 points.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the women’s 50m rifle three positions event.
