Defending World Series of Boxing (WSB) champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan booked their place in the playoff round of the competition with a thumping 5-0 victory over the Puerto Rico Hurricanes at the Sports Palace in Petropavlovsk.

The hosts were in dominant form throughout the contest against the Central Americans and moved to a total of 12 points in Group D by sweeping all five bouts on a commanding night for the 2015 champions.

The Kazakh franchise got off to the best possible start when lightweight Mardan Berikbayev used his experience to overcome 19-year-old John Ortiz by unanimous verdict.

Astana Arlans bantamweight Nursultan Kochshegulov struggled early on in the second bout of the evening, dropping the first round to Edgardo Rolon, who was causing his opponent problems with an array of long distance punches which found their target.

Kochshegulov fought back, however, to level with a much-improved second round display and went on to record a unanimous success to edge his team to the brink of victory.

Yerkin Mukhametzhan then wrapped up the win for the home franchise in style, knocking out the Hurricanes' Ivan Rosado within 74 seconds of a completely one-sided heavyweight affair.

Despite the victory having already been secured, the Astana Arlans were keen to hammer home their clear gulf in class over the Puerto Ricans, who remain winless at the bottom of the group.

The Kazakh team handed a WSB debut to middleweight Abilkhan Amankul and he did not disappoint, though he took a while to get going in his encounter with Raul Sanchez, who came into the fight having competed at the AIBA American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Buenos Aires earlier this month.

Once he found his range, Amankul took control and eventually cruised to a comfortable unanimous success to extend his team's lead to 4-0.

The whitewash was confirmed when Jean Carlos Rivera of the Puerto Rico Hurricanes withdrew from his light welterweight bout against Arlans captain and two-time WSB champion Samat Bashenov.
