Yun had set the third fastest time in the first run but his second effort proved to be the fastest time of the day at the Swiss venue as he clocked 1min 08.82sec - a promising omen for Pyeongchang 2018. 

It saw him end the competition with a combined time of 2:18.26, edging Tomass and Martins Dukurs to the gold medal by just 0.07 seconds as the brothers shared the silver medal. 

With the event doubling as the European Championships, the Latvian also shared that title.

It was the first time Tomass had won the crown but the seventh consecutive occasion for Martins, a run stretching back to the 2010 Championships in Igls. 

Russia’s Nikita Tregybov earned the European bronze medal, finishing in 2:18.85, but missed out of a World Cup podium place

Martins Dukurs currently leads the World Cup standings on 1,560 points ahead of the final race of the season in Königssee, with Yun still some way adrift on 1,365.

Austria’s Janine Flock celebrated her second World Cup win and the European crown in the women’s competition, finishing in 2:22.49.

She finished narrowly ahead of Germany’s Tina Hermann, with the 2014 European champion ended just 0.08 seconds off the pace.

Arguably the run of the day came from Switzerland’s Marina Gilardoni, as she rose from ninth position after her first effort to clinch a bronze medal, her second run helping her finish in 2:22.58.

The result also saw her achieve a first podium position at the event, with World Championship silver medallist Jacqueline Lölling of Germany finishing fourth,  a further 0.10 behind.

The event, organised by the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation, is due to continue tomorrow.

The women's bobsleigh and the two-man bob will take centre stage.
