Astana has been announced as the host of the 2016 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Under-18 World Championships.

The event is set to take place in Kazakhstan’s capital city from June 1 to 5, with matches held in front of the Astana Opera House.

All games at the Championships will be played on the same court with 20 men’s and 20 women’s teams vying for the titles, while three individual competitions, the men’s dunk contest, women’s skills contest and the mixed shoot-out will also be held.

The Kazakhstan Basketball Federation are working in partnership with the city of Astana, EXPO 2017, Astana Opera and Samruk Kazyna to deliver the fifth edition of the event, first organised in 2011.

A youthful men’s team from Kazakhstan had qualified for the 2015 Championships in Debrecen in Hungary, but they will be hoping to improve on their level of performance in June, when they finished 22nd in a 24 team event.

The holders New Zealand and beaten finalists Argentina are also scheduled to take part, alongside Andorra, Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy and The Netherlands.

Phillippines, Qatar, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine complete the men’s line-up for the competition.

Each of the teams were selected based upon their FIBA 3x3 Federation ranking, including the sport and development criteria, which the world governing body claim enables the strongest teams and the most active countries to take part.

France will be hoping to repeat their success in the women’s event in 2015 with the defending champions set to face competition from Andorra, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, Guatemala, Hungary, Israel and Italy.

As hosts Kazakhstan will also take part, as well as The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and the United States.

The Championships have previously been held in Italian city Rimini in 2011, Alcobendas, Spain, in 2012 and Indonesian capital Jakarta in 2013.

Debrecen hosted the 2015 tournament after Hungary were awarded the hosting rights last December, after the original hosts Israel were forced to withdraw due to unrest in the region, while Tunisia opted out a month after they were named replacement hosts last November.
