The United States' Gwen Jorgensen was crowned world champion for a second successive year after a 12th consecutive race victory at the 2015 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Chicago completed an undefeated season.

Jorgensen blasted away in the final 2.5 kilometres of the run to seal the title with a perfect score of 5,200 points in the Colombia Threadneedle Rankings.

"This is just crazy," said Jorgensen, who clocked a time of 1 hour 55min 36sec.

"I never thought I would be unbeaten this season.

"To be able to perform on so many different days when I am not feeling hilly courses; it just doesn’t seem real."

Great Britain's Non Stanford and Vicky Holland joined Jorgensen on the Grand Final podium, securing their spots at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"That is what I absolutely came here to do today," said Holland.

"You never want to enter a race not wanting to win, but with that said, for me getting on the podium today is a win."

Following Jorgensen onto the Series podium was New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt, who put together a consistent swim and cycle before hammering home on the run to take fourth spot in the race and boost her points tally enough to ensure second place overall.

Jorgensen’s compatriot Sarah True finished seventh on the day, but retained her place on the Series podium in third.

Jorgensen jutted her way to the front for a prime spot out on the bike after T1, and although training partner Charlotte McShane shot out of T2 first, Holland and Stanford were quick to blast past the young Australian, followed by the defending champion.

The threesome opened up a 12-second lead after the first of four running laps before a back and forth battle ensued between Jorgensen and Stanford for top spot with Holland placed firmly in third.

The contest between the front two remained tight for the first three laps, but Jorgensen went through the gears in the remaining kilometres and burst ahead of Stanford for the win.

Meanwhile in the women's under 23 race, France's Audrey Merle outran her compatriot Leonie Periault on the blue carpet in a down-to-the-wire finish.

Finishing just a hair after Merle, Periault had to settle for the silver medal despite officially posting the same time – 1:04:35 – as the victor.

Portugal's Melanie Santos walked away with the bronze medal, a feat that is especially significant as fellow countrywoman Vanessa Fernandes was honoured in the ITU Hall of Fame the night before.

As for the junior women's race, Laura Lindemann was crowned world champion for the second year in a row, with her time of 57:28 giving Germany its fourth medal of the Grand Final week.

Taking up the last two positions on the podium were the US's Taylor Knibb, who earned the silver medal, and Norway's Lotte Miller, who took bronze.
