Katie Ledecky is among those named on the Team USA Awards’ Best of August honours list, announced by the United States Olympic Committee, after earning five gold medals at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships last month.

In achieving the feat, Ledecky became the first swimmer in history to win the 200 metre, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle races in a single major competition.

She also anchored the women’s 800m freestyle relay team to a gold medal and broke her own world records in both the 800m and 1500m.

For her efforts in the Russian city of Kazan, Ledecky was crowned FINA’s Female Swimmer of the Meet.

Joining her on the honours list is Ashton Easton, who broke his own world record to win the decathlon gold medal at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing.

Scoring 9,045 points, Eaton defeated the field by more than 300 points and also set a world decathlon best of 45sec in the 400m, breaking fellow American Bill Toomy’s record of 45.68 from the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

The United States’ women’s wheelchair basketball team has also been recognised after winning the gold medal at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games and securing a place at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

With an average margin of victory of 55 points per game, Team USA saw off Peru, Argentina, El Salvador and Brazil en route to the final against Canada.

The US defeated the reigning world champions 80-72 in the gold medal match, led by a 37-point effort from Rose Hollermann.

In addition to Dow, the presenting sponsor, the Team USA Awards are supported by DICK’S Sporting Goods, Kellogg’s, Samsung and USG.

Each National Governing Body (NGB) nominates one female, one male and one team per discipline.

An internal nominating committee then selects five nominees from both the male and female categories, and three from the team category to advance to the voting round.

Votes received from NGB representatives and select members of the media account for 50 per cent of the final tally, with the other half determined by online fan voting via the Team USA Awards webpage, which can be accessed by clicking here.
