The Olympic flame was officially entrusted to Pyeongchang 2018 here today after an emotional week on Greek soil.

As the lights of Athens flickered in the distance, the Olympic flame for Pyeongchang 2018 burns on the Acropolis Hill beneath the Parthenon.

They used to call Delphi the "centre of the world" and now the Olympic flame burns here again, albeit only for a few hours.

It is already day five for the Torch Relay for next year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang which now heads south towards Athens.

Greek cross-country skier Apostolos Angelis and South Korea's former Manchester United footballer Park Ji-sung have set the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games Relay in motion, using the reserve flame from yesterday due to a lack of sunlight.

The Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Torch lighting ceremony will go ahead as planned in the precincts of the Ancient Olympia Stadium tomorrow, despite forecasts of heavy storms.

Ancient Olympia hosted its first modern pentathlon laser-run, an event which incorporates the finale of the Olympic version of the sport. 

There is a growing expectation here that the flame lit here at the rehearsal for the start of the Pyeongchang 2018 Torch Relay will be the one used for the official ceremony.

Every time this week that the flame lighting ceremony for Pyeongchang 2018 has been rehearsed, a flame has been lit and kept safely in a special lantern.

Greek cross-country skier Apostolos Angelis, 24, will be the first Torchbearer when the Relay from Ancient Olympia to Pyeongchang begins next Tuesday (October 24).
