Olympic first as no gold medal awarded in Sydney 100 metres

December 9 - Sydney's Olympic Games created another record today, more than nine years after the flame was extinguished, when it was decided that the women's 100 metres will be the first event in the 113-year history of the Games where no gold medal will be awarded because the first two across the line, Marion Jones and Ekaterina Thanou, have both had their careers stained by doping.


Ennis voted Sportswoman of the Year by journalists

December 9 - Jessica Ennis (pictured) was today voted the Sports Journalists' Association (SJA) Sportswoman of the Year, reward for her outstanding performance at the World Championships in Berlin in August when she won the gold medal in the heptathlon just a year after serious injury forced her to miss the Olympics in Beijing.
