The decision was taken at the FISU Executive Committee meeting on 1 March in Lausanne, Switzerland. The dates coincide with the induction of 10 new FISU members, the unveiling of the FISU 75th anniversary plaque and come just few days after Michelle Tanner was appointed Vice-Chair of the FISU Gender Equality Committee.

Hill Carrow, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the 2029 World University Games, said: "These were the dates recommended and requested by our university hosts and other venues involved in our bid as being the best dates for these institutions and facilities to host the Games." "Now that the dates have been confirmed, we can be more specific about our project timelines as we continue to plan for the major event," he added.

North Carolina's bid for the FISU World University Games stretched from Raleigh to Greensboro, encompassing the Triangle and Triad areas. With over 7,000 athletes competing in 18 sports over 12 days, it's the largest event for student athletes. 

The United States has only hosted the FISU World University Summer Games just once, back in 1993, which took place in Buffalo, New York. The USA has also hosted the Winter Games once, in 2023 in Lake Placid, New York. 

During the Executive Committee meeting, FISU asked the North Carolina Organising Committee to present its first progress report on the preparations for the 2029 Games in North Carolina.
