Hosts Chile have been handed a tough group in the men's handball tournament at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games which features three of the semi-finalists from four years ago.

Chile reached the men's final for the first time at Lima 2019, beating the three-time winners Brazil in the semi-finals before losing to Argentina.

They are set to face Brazil again in Pool A at the Sausalito Stadium in Viña del Mar, as well as Mexico who reached the last four in the Peruvian capital before losing to Argentina.

Argentina's title defence is set to begin against Cuba, seeking a first podium finish since Rio de Janeiro 2007, the United States and Uruguay.

In the women's tournament, Brazil are seeking a seventh consecutive title at the Pan American Games.

They have been drawn against Lima 2019 bronze medallists Cuba, Paraguay and Uruguay in Pool B.

Argentina have finished as runners-up at the last three editions of the Games, and are in Pool A with Canada, Puerto Rico and hosts Chile.

Only the top two from each pool are set to advance to the semi-finals.

The women's handball tournament at Santiago 2023 is scheduled for October 24 to 29, followed by the men's from October 30 to November 4.

The Pan American Games serves as an Olympic qualifier in handball, with the winners securing a place at Paris 2024.

Organisers have reported 81.9 per cent of available tickets have been sold for men's matches and 47.4 per cent for women's.
