Harrie Smolders reached the podium for a third consecutive Global Champions Tour Grand Prix as the Dutch rider claimed victory in Riesenbeck.

Smolders rode Uricas V.D Kattevennen to victory at the season’s 11th round in Germany, after triumphing in an eight strong jump-off.

His victory in Riesenbeck followed on from third last time out in A Coruña, Spain, and second at round nine in Monaco.

The pair were lightning fast around the Riesenbeck course, cutting over a second off the time to stop the clock in 45.56sec.

Only one pair were left to go after Smulders, however Austria’s Max Kühner and his mount Elektric Blue P could not match the previous rider’s pace, also going clear but in a time of 46.17, enough for second.

The podium was completed by a home rider, as Germany’s Daniel Deusser also went clear in the jump-off, with his time of 46.60, riding Killer Queen VDM, enough for third place.

Irish riders filled the next three places, with fourth going to Trevor Breen onboard Highland President, and fifth to Michael Duffy on Cinca 3, as both also recorded clear rounds.

Eoin McMahon on Mila finished sixth, after knocking down the third from last fence.

Abdel Said of Belgium onboard Bonne Amie finished seventh after hitting the roll back fence, while Germany’s Gerrit Nieberg, onboard the horse Ben, placed eighth.

Speaking after his victory Smolders said: "I am focusing on my horses, if they feel well, I have to ride well, and then the results will come.

"I just need to be patient, take my chances, and if that leads into records then that is of course brilliant."

Despite not competing in Riesenbeck, Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten leads the overall championship standings on 231 points.

Germany’s Christian Kukuk is second overall with 205 points, with Smolders third on 194 after collecting maximum points for the win in round 11 of the circuit.

The next round of the season is scheduled to be held at Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, England, from August 10 to 13.
