Toledo notched scores of 9.93 and 8.83 points to finish on a winning total of 18.76 to take the title, with Ewing scoring 12.60.

It was his third victory of the season to strengthen his place at the top of the world rankings ahead of Ewing with two legs remaining.

Toledo will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Italo Ferreira in delivering surfing gold for Brazil at the Olympics after securing his ticket to Paris 2024.

"I think [Brazil] managed to unlock a new level because everyone was very excited," Toledo told Olympics.com.

"We had the world champion and a guy who wins a medal in the Olympics.

"It is something extraordinary, so the expectation is for the best.

"I hope I can be there, representing my country, representing my sport and, who knows, maybe getting a medal for Brazil again."

Despite the disappointment of finishing runner-up in South Africa, Ewing was celebrating after confirming his place at next year’s Olympics.

American Griffin Colapinto and Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti also secured their ticket to the Games following his performance at Jeffreys Bay.

They are poised to join France’s Kauli Vaast, Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi, New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and South Africa’s Jordy Smith after qualifying to Paris 2024 at the World Surfing Games.

There was delight for American Lakey Peterson at Jeffreys Bay as she claimed her first WSL Championship Tour win of the season.

Scores of 8.50 and 6.27 saw Peterson seal the title with 14.77 as Australia’s Molly Picklum had to settle for silver with 13.50.

The next leg of the WSL Championship Tour is set to take place in Tahiti from August 11 to 20.
