Yago Dora and Caitlin Simmers surged to unexpected victories on the eighth leg of the World Surf League Championship Tour as they conquered the Rio Pro in Brazil.

Dora became the fifth consecutive home winner in Saquarema and claimed his first Championship Tour win after five years on the circuit with a remarkable performance.

The 27-year-old pulled off a humongous, full rotation aerial in the final against Australian Ethan Ewing for a perfect ten on his first run.

His two attempts combined for a total of 14.83 to get the better of Ewing's 10.83.

Dora had been producing leading scores throughout the contest and even took down Hawaii's John John Florence, the last non-Brazilian Rio Pro winner, in the semi-final.

"This week was something special, best week of my life I'm going to say," Dora said afterwards.

"Even on the flat days, it was so much fun.

"I just had a feeling something special was going to happen and it did.

"It took a long time but that first win came at the right time and the right place, so I'm beyond happy."

Florence and Australia's Ryan Callinan took the bronze medals while Ewing sealed his fourth podium of the year.

In the women's event, American rookie Simmers picked up the second win of her career.

The 17-year-old's final showing was characterised by big manoeuvres on the backhand to comfortably beat Tyler Wright of Australia for gold by 14.66 points to 9.80.

The pair were joined on the podium by another American in Caroline Marks and Hawaii's Carissa Moore.

"Tyler is really good and the ocean was kind of on my side that one," Simmons said.

"This is probably the craziest moment of my life.

"Looking in from out there in the water and just seeing everything and everyone on the beach.

"You can't even see a spot of sand.

"It's crazy."

The event was plagued by poor conditions for most of the week in Saquarema, a beach town about 100 kilometres east of Rio de Janeiro, before clearing up in time for finals day.

The results see both Dora and Simmers surge into fifth place in the men's and women's overall Championship Tour rankings.

Just two events remain before the World Surf League Finals in California, where the top five will compete for glory.

Athletes head to Jeffreys Bay in South Africa for the penultimate regular season event, set to take place from July 13 to 22.
