Thai 400 metres athletes Chaiwat Rattana and Pongsakorn Paeyo set world records in back-to-back races on day three at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris.

Rattana dominated the men's T34 final in 48.65sec for his maiden World Championships gold at the Stade Sébastien Charléty.

Mohamed Alhammadi won the United Arab Emirates' first medal in the French capital with a 49.21 effort for silver, and Canada's Austin Smeenk placed third with an American continent record of 49.32.

Rattana's success was immediately followed by the back-to-back Paralympic champion in the men's T53 event Paeyo surpassing the 46.61 world record mark he set at Tokyo 2020 with a victory in 46.11.

Canadian Brent Lakatos also produced a fast time of 46.22 but had to settle for silver, and the United States' Brian Siemann completed the podium with a personal best 48.30.

World records were also set in the men's T47 high jump and women's T37 long jump.

Back-to-back Paralympic champion Roderick Townsend cleared 2.16 metres in the first of those events for gold, and China's Wen Xiaoyan triumphed in the latter for the third consecutive World Championships by adding 0.11m to the 5.22m she set in Dubai four years ago.
