World number 43 Christopher Eubanks has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals today after upsetting Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets, just a month after infamously describing grass as "the stupidest surface to play tennis on."

American Eubanks, who entered the world’s top 100 in April, sent a message to former women’s world number one Kim Clijsters of Belgium last month after losing at a tournament in Surbiton, England, on the second-tier Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger Tour, saying: "Kim, grass is the stupidest surface to play tennis on."

Since his infamous remarks and some advice from Clijsters, Eubanks has won nine consecutive matches on grass, putting himself into the world’s top 40.

He claimed the biggest scalp of his fairytale run at the All England Lawn Tennis Club today, when he beat Greece’s fifth seed Tsitsipas, who has already won matches over five sets against Austria’s Dominic Thiem and Britain’s Sir Andy Murray at the tournament.

Tsitsipas won the first set 6-3, before Eubanks claimed set two on a tie-break 7-6.

Tsitsipas responded to win set three 6-3, before Eubanks replied to win the fourth set 6-4 and take his opponent the distance for the third time at the championships.

Eubanks then clinched the decider by the same scoreline, 6-4, sealing victory in just over three hours, and calling the surface "my best friend" during his post-match interviews after the win.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, top seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, the 2022 US Open champion, came from a set down to beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Second seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia dropped his first set of the tournament as he returned to complete his match with Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the 17th seed.

Djokovic, who is seeking an eighth Wimbledon crown, resumed with a two-set lead over Hurkacz, before the 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist earned a first break of the match in taking set three 7-5.

Djokovic found his first break of serve in the match in set four and it was enough to secure a 7-6, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 win.

In the women’s singles draw, Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina set up a repeat of last year’s final in the last eight after both won today.

Jabeur, the sixth seed from Tunisia, was in red hot form as she overcame double Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic with ease, winning 6-0, 6-3 in just over an hour.

Third seed Rybakina of Kazakhstan, the defending champion, benefited from the retirement of her Brazilian opponent Beatriz Haddad Maia, who struggled with a lower back injury, and called a halt to proceedings trailing 4-1 in the first set.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka won a meeting of two neutral athletes, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-0.

Action is scheduled to continue with the start of the men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals tomorrow.
