The United States Sailing Association is set to host its Olympic Trials for Paris at Miami Yacht Club in Florida next year.

This will primarily use the Atlantic Ocean, with Biscayne Bay also providing course options.

Trials in the 49er, mixed 470 and men's and women's IQ foil and Formula Kite classes are set to be held from January 6 to 13, followed by International Laser Class Association (ILCA) 6 and ILCA 7 events from February 17 until 24.

US sailing team executive director Paul Cayard believes the Miami Yacht Club will prove a worthy venue for the Trials.

"We are honoured to have the Miami sailing community and, in particular, Miami Yacht Club’s patriotism and enthusiasm for supporting America’s top sailing athletes and their journey to represent the US at the Olympic Games Paris 2024," he said.

"The US Olympic Team Trials are a competition which will test boat speed, focus, mental strength, the ability to win races, and the ability to sail consistently over a series of races, all of which are required to succeed at the Olympic Games."

Athletes or teams who win the qualification series for selection to the Olympic Test Event in Marseille and go on to achieve a top three finish at the competition from July 7 to 16 this year will automatically be nominated to represent the US at Paris 2024.

The Trials are then set to serve as a selection opportunity for classes in which no athlete was nominated from the Olympic Test Event.

Tokyo 2020 principal race officer Tom Duggan is set to hold the same role for the Trials, with notices of race expected on August 1.

The women's 49er FX and mixed Nacra 17 classes do not feature on the programme for the US Olympic Trials.

Women's 49er FX late selection is set to be based on combined World Championships and Princess Sofia Regatta results in 2024, with the latter event in Spain and the Nacra 17 Europeans being used for the mixed Nacra 17.

US selection criteria for sailing has been drafted by an International Selection Committee chaired by two-time Olympic medallist JJ Fetter.

The US is second on the all-time medals table at the Olympics for sailing behind Great Britain with 19 golds.

Its most recent podium finish was a men's Finn bronze for Caleb Paine at Rio 2016.

Sailing at Paris 2024 is due to be held at the Marseille Marina in southern France from July 28 to August 8.

IQ Foil and Formula Kite have been added to the programme to replace the Finn and RS:X events, while men's and women's 470 has been combined to a mixed competition.
