Double Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin has clinched the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Championships women's giant slalom gold medal for the first time in her career at Courchevel Méribel.

The American won her seventh World Championships title as she managed to overcome a mistake near the end of the race to preserve her first-run lead for an overall time of 2min 07.13sec.

Italy's Federica Brignone was 0.12 seconds off the pace in a closely separated podium, which had Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel in third in 2:07.35.

"That's unbelievable," Shiffrin said.

"I was so nervous, my God.

"I can't believe it.

"This is not an easy position, with the home crowd favourite.

"I mean, thank you for cheering for me anyway."

Shiffrin’s victory came a day after an unexpected split with long-time coach Mike Day.

Day left the team during the middle of the World Championships after Shiffrin informed him that she planned to take a new direction with her staff at the end of the season.

The win was Shiffrin's 13th World Championships medal in her career which is the most since the event has been contested biennially.

Germany's Christl Cranz has the most medals with 15, including 12 gold.

However, her wins came between 1934 and 1939 when the Championships took place every year.

The victory also makes Shiffrin just the fourth female skier to win world titles in four different disciplines having won the slalom in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

She won the super-G in 2019 and the combined in 2021.

Shiffrin recovered after not finishing her opening event at the Championships last week when she missed a gate in the slalom section of the combined discipline.

The 27-year-old is close to making history in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup as she is one win away from equalling Swede Ingemar Stenmark's overall total of 86.

The men's giant slalom qualification race also took place today with Israel's Benjamin Szollos topping the standings after 2:21.13 ahead of Poland's Piotr Habdas in 2:21.42 and Bulgarian Albert Popov with 2:21.46.

Competition continues tomorrow with the medal races as Szollos will aim to continue his form.
