The United States clinched the mixed team parallel title for the first time at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Championships in Méribel with a thrilling victory in the final against Norway.

Nina O'Brien narrowly beat Kristin Lysdahl by 0.13sec with her time of 23.14 putting the US into a lead on the Roc de Fer course in the French resort.

Lysdahl was stepping in for Maria Therese Tviberg, who injured herself in defending champions Norway's 3-1 semi-final victory against Austria.

Alexander Steen Olsen pipped River Radamus across the finish line by 0.04 with his 21.95 run to level for Norway, and drama followed in the third head-to-head as Paula Moltzan for the US and Thea Louise Stjernesund were tied at 22.74.

That set up a decider between American Tommy Ford and Norwegian Timon Haugan.

Haugan's hopes took a huge blow when he got his ski tips caught in the start gate, giving him too big a deficit to claw back.

Ford finished in 22.67, beating his opponent by 1.50.

The Americans won their first tie in the round-of-16 with a faster aggregate time after drawing 2-2 with Poland, then beating Italy 3-2 in the quarter-finals before seeing off Canada 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Katie Hensien and Luke Winters also earned gold medals for the US, while Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen and Tviberg collected silvers for Norway.

The bronze medal tie between Canada and Austria finished level at 2-2.

Reigning Olympic champions Austria fell 0.67sec short to hand bronze medals to Canada's Valérie Grenier, Erik Read, Jeffrey Read and Britt Richardson.

Beijing 2022 silver medallists Germany had lost 3-1 to Austria in the quarter-finals.

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are set to continue tomorrow with the men's and women's parallel giant slalom races in Méribel, which is co-hosting the event with Courchevel.
